DNA - Delivering services faster than 1Gbit/s

12 points from Finland to Waystream

DNA is one of the leading service providers in Finland. The company started in 2001 as a small mobile operator but has since grown to include fixed network business and cable-tv. Today DNA has about 3.7 million subscriptions in its fixed and mobile communications networks. It is the fixed broadband market leader in Finland with a market share of 34% which has been achieved through organic growth. It is also the second largest mobile operator in Finland. DNA was acquired by Telenor Group in 2019.

DNA’s main office is in Helsinki, but broadband services are offered in all major cities mainly through agreements with housing associations where they have a dominant market share in Finland.

The company deploys their own fiber network to connect buildings. Within apartment buildings the network belongs to the housing association but if copper or fiber is built to apartments, DNA makes use of it for fixed broadband services.

DNA also offers business services such as wholesale and business VPN.

Use of Waystream switches started in 2024 in order to deliver services faster than 1Gbit/s to their customers, using the MS7300 series (up to 2.5Gbit/s over copper Ethernet) and MS8000 series (up to 10Gbit/s over fiber). DNA already has a substantial customer base using 2Gbit/s service rates, but the most popular service is still about 300Mbit/s for Internet.

Mikko Kannisto, Vice President broadband business at DNA, was the key person behind the switch to Waystream switches.

“The decision to go with Waystream was based on three major grounds. The Waystream solution is cost effective, sustainable and manufactured in Europe. Waystream’s way of operating fits very well with the vision and goals of DNA”, says Mikko Kannisto.

The network is built around Broadband Network Gateways (BNGs) that provide service control. IPv6 is part of the service offering and has been available to DNA's customers for the past 10 years. Home gateways provided with the service are qualified to support both IPv4 and IPv6 by DNA.

A key focus for DNA is customer experience, to always put their customers first. Proof of the company success is the recent EPSI Rating where broadband consumers in Finland were queried in September 2024 about customer satisfaction. DNA ranked the highest in both B2B and B2C customer satisfaction, confirming that they have the most satisfied and loyal consumer broadband customers in the industry.

Final question from Waystream. Will Finland give Sweden 12 points in Eurovision for Bara Bada Bastu?
